Two words of advice: Be flexible.

I take a kick-a$$ trip every year on miles. Including one to Oz on QF. It is possible. You just have to devote time, patience, and be willing to sacrifice a goat or two to the mileage gods. There's a reason why thousands of very intelligent people spend so much time on sites like FlyerTalk. Mileage redemption is a very complex game, and requires skill to get [close to] what you want.
