Moron Delta agent. The only reason for sending them back would be to make the GA's life easier if there were an SSSS.... otherwise, no good reason at all.
This is my understanding of the rules at my airport. We allow pax in on a boarding pass dated for that day. Doesn't matter if my airport is the originating airport, or the destination, or not noted on the BP at all. Some flights will connect or layover in my airport but it is not listed on the BP anywhere. Don't care if they are "used" or not. Some people will fly in, collect their baggage and then come back thru security to eat.
Doesn't work at most other airports. I endured an extra 7 minute delay in line one day at SAT because the ID checker couldn't figure out a code-share boarding pass (ATA BP, WN flight - he kept insisting to the pax that ATA only flew charters from another terminal, and therefore the pax was not allowed through. They finally had to get a WN agent to the line, but they refused to let the line move until the WN agent showed up.)
