Qatar Airways has announced plans to purchase a 49% stake in Meridiana airline, Italy’s second largest carrier, behind Alitalia. Qatar Airways made the announcement at the Farnborough International Airshow on the heels of another announcement that the airline seeks to buy up to 10% of LATAM Airlines, South America’s biggest carrier. “This agreement sets the path to progress our work towards a strong resolution that benefits both the staff and passengers who travel with Meridiana,” said Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker in a statement. The Meridiana deal is part of a larger trend by big global airlines as they attempt to expand their influence by taking equity stakes in international airlines.
