Bit late catching up bit my wife and I have travelled on several occasions in the 777 from
BNE to LA in J in Row 1. No Problems at all with noise from Galley or Toilets.
The mysterious row 5 is curtained off behind the Bar so can be very noisy. Generally blocked for VIP's Plats etc. Had it on one trip and found it claustrophobic.
We always allow a minimum of 3 hours to transit LA.

While you could call it claustrophobic, I like that the curtains block off more light than there is in the main part of the J cabin.

Thanks for posting. To be honest, I just came back an LA round trip. Had Row 5 in both directions and had no problems with bar noise (despite it being well used). The bigger issue is that it is closer to the engines.

I found that row 5 was much more quiet and darker than the main business cabin. The couple of times that I walked through the main cabin to use the restroom I found it to be far to bright and with too much commotion to really promote sleep.

I was only on VA in one direction (going to Australia) and rode in row 5.

If calling, sometimes you will get push-back from an agent saying the seats are reserved, however if you have status the seats should be allocatable.

I had had row 5 a few times, and dont particularly like it, as mentioned, feels closed in, can get some engine and bar noise, but they can often put children in there as well, as it is away from the main area.
I would always go D, and hope to get a couple on my right so they dont go past me. Also a bit quicker to get off the plane on the left side obviously.

My understanding is that the A330's are receiving the new J product first, followed by the 777's, which operate the LAX-BNE flights. The article I read stated the first 777 to enter service with the new product was to be December, so there's a chance you may get it. I'm flying LAX-BNE in mid-November in J and am keeping my fingers crossed (but being realistic) that timelines get bumped up and they have a 777 upgraded by then.
