Save Expiring Miles?

I fly weekly (IAD-HHH) on US, but have the miles posted to my UA MP acct.

I have a nominal amount of miles on US DM that I was just informed I will lose on 10/01/2009.

The expiration notice says:

WARNING: Your last activity was on 3/21/2008, and you are in danger of losing your miles. You can keep your account active by earning or redeeming miles by 10/1/2009. Here are a few ways you can keep your account active:

1. Book and fly on US Airways or any of our partners.
2. Sign up and earn miles with one of our credit cards.
3. Make a purchase on the new Dividend Miles Shopping Mall.
4. Pay a fee to keep your account active.

Now, I have no interest in doing 2-4. I could allocate miles from one of my weekly trips to US DM to have "account activity", however I don't anticipate ever using the US miles because the allocation of miles to UA MP suits my other travel more appropriately.

Is there ever an opportunity to transfer miles from US to UA? Can they be donated to a good cause? Or, just let them lapse?

Well it's not free but you could go through the shopping mall and buy a single i-tune for $1 which would give you activity for another 18 months.

No way to transfer the miles from US to UA.

You can in fact donate the miles to charity.

Sign up for Points.com and get 10 miles for free. The miles posted quickly (maybe the next day?) for my daughters account.

Thanks, for the input . . . donated the miles to Fisher House . . . all in all, a pretty easy decision.

Just look and see when your last activity was. All miles expire if you have 18 months of inactivity.

Appreciate the reminder I am good thankfully.
Forgot I did some dining activity this past summer
Sneaky though of US Air not to show the exp of ones miles clearly in the acct activity section

Might be ineptitude rather than sneakiness.

It's the crap-tastic "new and improved" website. I'm guessing there might be some indication when your miles are about to expire, but no expiration date posted. Actually of all my accounts UA and US were the only ones who posted the expiration date. All others you just have to calculate it from your last activity date.

I am signed up for electronic Dividend Miles statements. Through September, the e-statements have a separate line that tells you when the miles expire and to earn more miles before that date to keep your account active. No such statement is shown on the October e-statement though.

Hmmm...

Our customers told us that they prefer smaller, less cluttered e-statements that take less of their valuable time to read, so we have enhanced our e-statements in line with our customers' desires..

And reduced the expiration warning to 24 hours:

Your Dividend Miles account requires immediate attention!

For anyone doing research....

I purchased iTunes to keep my 2 daughters' account active earlier this year. One posted two separate transactions in 8 and 12 days (on the same date). The other I tried several times and finally gave up , as expiration approached, and used points.com (iirc) to keep it active. I was doing my annual expiration check today and the missing purchases eventually appeared. I first purchased on 1/31 for a 2/28 expiration, tried again 2/4, 2/12, and 2/15, and finally went down the points.com path 2/20. The iTunes all posted on 2/26 or 3/2.

So iTunes does appear to work, but be sure to give it a month to post.
