I think people forget the range of the early 737s. It was 2,250-2,400 miles on a -300/-400/-500. CO flew them EWR-PHX which is longer than CLT-SAN (only 2,077 miles). I have a 1995 OAG and it's filled with transcons and near transcons on 737-300s and -400s.

Not normally - just like the A321 unusually high headwinds resulted in fuel stops westbound. The standard 737-400 was range restricted by fuel capacity. As I recall, once the A319/320's started arriving in enough numbers US started removing the extra tank since it wasn't used once the 737's stopped doing transcons.

Jim, the 737-400 had extra tanks to allow it make it a non stop without a fuel stop.

So does the A321 but we know how that works out...

Once US stopped doing transcons with the -400, I believe that they pulled the extra tanks out since the additional range wasn't needed. That saved weight while restoring the rear baggage compartment to it's original size.

What "them" did you think they sold? If the extra tanks and affiliated plumbing I'm sure that US tried to but have no idea how much demand there was. Obviously US didn't sell the 7374's as they're only retiring the last one next month. Ironically, US didn't have 7374's on order - they came from PI - but US wasted no time in taking delivery of those that PI had ordered.

I am booked LGA-PHL-CLT-SAV. Cost me $145 today. I will be flying all the way through to SAV and then back the next morning, I can guest 1 at all lounges along the way.

I had really wanted to do all 3 737 flights but cost wasn't worth it starting the day from CLT.

BWI-CLT-DFW-PHL-CLT-JFK is available all on the same day for $383. I had trouble booking it so just went with the very last flight.

This 737 classic fan is booked on the final! Was trying to get all 3, but it simply wasn't working out. Happy to get on the last though. Was supposed to be on one of the last 733 but it went maintenance...so hoping for better luck this time. Maybe time for a wiki?

edit to add: created a wiki feel free to edit and format as you wish

Through some research I've seen that only N435US and N449US are active so it looks to be one of those.
