Thanks neotope for correcting the broken link. Sorry I didn't notice it sooner!

My mistake - I took "a few years" as more like 3-4 years than 7 years.

The one daily flight between SAN and CLT back in the 90's was operated with a 734. That was mostly my experience with the bird. They also used to fly a lot of the DCA-Florida routes. That's the only other time I remember flying on them.

They did a lot of transcons in the 1990's...the 737-300s too. The 734s had IFE back then, nice clunky CRT monitors hanging from the ceiling.

Prior to and for about 10 years after the PI/US merger, PI and then US operated more 737's than any other carrier. Wolf's tenure as CEO and his big Airbus order brought that to an end after 9-11.

The Airbus infiltration began well before 9/11 with the first narrowbody deliveries in 1998, IIRC, and then the widebodies in 2000.

Sorry - bad phrasing on my part. The Airbuses did indeed start arriving prior to 9-11 but on 9-11 the 737 was still the most numerous fleet type I believe. However, the 737 fleet was shrinking and the Airbus fleet growing.

If I took all 3 flights that day, how many miles/segments would I get since all have the same flight number 737? Would it matter how I book it? Due to cost, I may just try and get on the last leg.

That is a good question! As usual with same number flight it would get you 0/0, but this one might be an exception that they would manually adjust.

The simple, although possibly more expensive, solution is to buy O/W tickets for each segment. With only one plane, you won't miss your connection.

US Air flew a 734 CLT-SAN-CLT, had extra fuel tanks to be able to make the trip. I'm sure those birds are long gone.

have no idea, but it was regular service for US, now this was in the 80's-90's.
