AVL I suspect. Others may have different opinions.

AVL, GSO, CLT are all under a two hour drive away, I suspect TRI is closer--I've never driven from TRI to Boone, though.

TRI, as per Mapquest:
Total Est. Time: 1 hour, 32 minutes Total Est. Distance: 68.29 miles
But it is a mountain route!

Fly into Charlotte. It has the best schedules and only takes 1 3/4 hours to get to Boone from the airport.

I've driven from Johnson City to Boone on US 321 via Elizabethton. While the road from Elizabethton to Boone is largely two lanes, it does not go over any mountains, rather it goes through them. It is a very pretty drive. At Johnson City, you would get on I-26 North, go up to the junction of I-81, and go in the direction of Bristol for a couple of miles. TRI has its own exit and is south of the I-81.

Believe me, I know this since I live in TRI and am from AVL. However, the road does go through the mountains, Mountain City, TN, etc.

PS. It is pretty of course, I just wanted the OP to be aware of the terrain.

Wouldn't ROA also be a viable option?

It is a beautiful drive from TRI, but I would opt for CLT--it's likely you'll find easier flights--or possibly GSO.

YW!!

There are tons of flights between MCO and CLT and by the time you wait for your connect to Asheville or GSO , fly there then rent a car, you will be in your hotel having a cocktail and enjoying the beauty of Boone!! And the drive is amazing...VERY worth the time. Time permitting, if you have never done so, at least on the drive TO Boone, go to Asheville and hop on the Blueridge Parkway....Very beautiful drive.
