My nemesis in Italy is the train system. Thirty years ago I was traveling by train from Florence to Vicenza and they went on strike about half way through the trip stranding us for a few hours. Fast forward to two years ago and I'm traveling from Florence to Livorno, first time on an Italian train since the strike plagued one 30 years earlier, and was assured that "wildcat" strikes were rare and most strikes were announced and published. Guess what? They went on strike. Will say we were luckier this time and were on the last train to make the full trip that day.

The Italian minister of transport even has a webpage to track all strikes: http://scioperi.mit.gov.it/mit2/public/scioperi
It's a terrible site, full of meaningless acronyms, but through Google Translate you can get a sense if there's an airline, train or local transports strike -- enough so you can do research or ask someone in the know to make sense of the alphabet soup.
