United selling miles (RDM) at 40% off up to 100,000

Two day sale on now through 11:59pm CDT 25 April 2012. Rate is now 2.25cpm. Minimum of 2000/max of 100000 purchased per account.

Still not a great deal, but better than full price.

Hmm, at 2.257 cents per mile that's kinda worthwhile. Snap up a hundred thousand miles and fly yourself business class to Europe for $2257 (plus tens in fees); that's better than all but the cheapest Z-fare sales.

I know! I'm tempted to take the plunge, as I'm planning to go to South Africa (again) in 2013. I'm already going this May, using MP points on SA in J. I already have 20k in the bank. Need to plan ahead for these things.

Have there been deals better than this in the past? Say, closer to my last reward maximizer at 2.00 cpm?

I bought 2k so I can book J out and F return on an upcoming award.

It's nice they're not charging a fixed fee per purchase so buying small quantities is viable.

Not better than 2.0cpm via MileagePlus Reward Maximizer.

Which one can trigger by booking a (refundable, preferably) ticket with a partner airline operating one of the legs, then buy the Reward Maximizer, and refund or cancel the ticket. I've been offered well north of 100k RDM on an itin via Reward Maximizer before (well, that was a special case since it was calculating based off the waitlisted TPAC C segments and the TPAC Y segments...).

Wow, didn't realize what a horrible value they try to pass off at regular price.

It appears that there may be some relation to the type of itin and airlines involved. E.g. to get 2.0 cpm, you need an international itin with partner-operated flights for some of the legs. A slightly higher 2.3 cpm or thereabouts will come from a domestic itin with partner flights. The 2.7 cpm shows for an all-UA domestic itin. Or something to that effect.

ETA: For upcoming itins, I get:
  • International, some LH legs: 2.0 cpm
  • International, all-UA metal: 2.5 cpm
  • Domestic, some ZK legs: 2.4 cpm
  • Domestic, all-UA metal: 2.8 cpm

I was offered 2.003 cpm last week when flying GRU-ORD, all on sUA.

I took it, BTW, but for some reason the miles haven't been added to my balance, despite appearing in the activity window.

Yes, finally they seem to have understood that they're losing the small-ball game with the fees.

Does anyone know if purchased miles really take 48 hours to post? Kind of annoying since their award ticket holds are only good until midnight the following day. Still a good deal for me as I just need a top off...just can't really figure the dates until the miles are posted I guess.
