Flight turbulance - injures on UA1031, PTY-IAH 20 June 2017

Surprised there wasn't a thread on this & wasn't sure it should go into the flight waivers thread for Cindy since it doesn't pertain to Cindy.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...urbulence.html

"Fourteen passengers on board a flight from Panama City to Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport were injured on Tuesday when the plane struck severe turbulence. The plane struct turbulence mid-way through the flight, while cruising 80 miles east of Cancun, Mexico. Of the 160 that were on board, 14 were injured and seven were taken to the hospital. Authorities say some of the passengers were taken to the hospital for anxiety, chest pain and shortness of breath, but most simply had minor bumps, bruises and neck pain."

Glad it wasn't worse.

Is here any sort of anxiolytic (benzodiazepine) in the in flight emergency medical kit? There must be, right?

Who does UA use for turbulence forecasts these days and is it integrated into their flightplanning and ASD?

I'm surprised this story wasn't picked locally and/or nationally here in the US.

Do you mean wasn't?

There was a report (with passenger interviews) on Good Morning America today.

So we can safely assume that 11 passengers weren't properly buckled up, correct?

yes, fixed thanks.

I mean I really don't think it deserves national attention but knowing how dramatic and sensationalistic the news is I'd figure this story would be right in their wheelhouse.

No worries; here's a link to the GMA video - http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/doze...light-48177345

Always wonder how Immigration & Customs deals with that. Do passengers (non US-citizen) have to give their fingerprints while laying on an emergency stretcher?

Well, there's the sensationalist headline. Most news outlets report around 14 "injuries" and 10 people taken to the hospital. GMA leads with "dozens injured".

Maybe merge this with the rants about AA, DL, & UA, each of which are said by people who apparently can predict turbulence that each carrier is quicker than the other in turning on the seat belt sign too quickly and discontinuing service.

@clubord had it right at WSI.

Here's a typical direct flight plan PTY to IAH. I'm including the bright yellow/orange Forecast Turbulence - not much over the gulf today @FL390.

you can also click the PIREPS - notice there is 1 on route, just SE of IAH.

Additionally able to retrieve a briefing that contains all en route info.

That explains why my PIT-DEN flight this morning went over northern KY and southern KS rather than the more normal northerly route near South Bend, Des Moines, and Omaha.
