3-5 inches of rain expected at LAX on January 22, 2017

This amount of rain is unheard of.... What do you think will happen?

Unfortunately probably a lot of auto accidents. Even when it drizzles slightly, it seems that folks in the area don't know how to drive on wet roads

Why doesn't the weather waiver cover LAX?

Hopefully it will -- that much rain could wreak havoc on roads and especially at the airport.

Unheard of to whom?

The drought of the last 4 years has gotten all of the recent attention, but California weather is noted for its extremes. Some years there is hardly any rain while in others the state, and Los Angeles, is inundated by heavy storms. Read any one of the above articles.

Wasnt looking for a history lesson. This is an extreme weather event for Los Angeles and will undoubtedly cause travel delays.

I predict it will be very wet. And yes, California does have 4 seasons: Spring, Summer, Fire, Flood.

LAX is not SFO, where the 4 parallel runways are spaced too closely to maintain the same capacity during inclement weather. But the winds will likely cause ATC to switch landings and departures to runways 6 and 7 L/R. For most arrivals, that'll add 15 minutes as the flight will need to pass over LAX and the turn back over the Pacific.

This made me think about the oft repeated boarding procedure announcement, "Please be seated as soon as possible, and kindly move out of the aisles, as today we have a COMPLETELY full flight!"

... vs an INCOMPLETELY full flight, I guess?

I used to live in LA, and... while it's true that Angelinos are generally pretty bad at driving in the rain, there's something of a reason for it. The LA basin traps a fair amount of hydrocarbon smog, and it often goes for quite a while without rain. Net effect: the roads end up with a thin sheen of what's basically oil on them. When it does rain (after 1-3 weeks of no rain), you get a surface that's shocking slippery for a couple of hours, until it washes clean. I grew up in Alaska and figured I knew how to drive in any weather, but I had a couple of terrifying slides in LA before I learned that the first couple hours of a rainstorm are special.

In other news... I flew through SFO on 1/8, when the Bay Area got hit with a similar amount of rain, and it was a complete zoo. Since LAX is even less used to that sort of thing, I imagine it will be ridiculous on the ground, even if the runway situation keeps the airside operation running better.

i

It was raining very hard this morning in LAX! And then, seemingly out of nowhere ... the sun showed up and blue skies around 3p!
