At the first sign of trouble in Syntagma Square, United will pull out of ATH.

RNE and TSMRSRNE in said square during a protest.
See how frightened we are?

I've been watching SFO-CDG; the upgauge to 772 opened up a lot of O/I/R in the summer. ^

In return they axed the 2nd seasonal IAD-CDG just introduced this summer in favour of u/g of a/c (from 763 + 752 ---> 772), they u/g ORD-CDG from 763 to 772 as well
On the other hand not sure if they operated 2xd in S15 from EWR to CDG.

we flew EWR-ATH in the early fall of 2011, one of the last flights of the season the last year that they flew the route....we went back this year flying EWR-GVA-ATH and returned on AC though YUL...there is a significant demand for Y tourism to Greece in the summer, and there's also a lot of pretty well heeled flyers that would spring for J. Also, plenty of Star Alliance connections in ATH with Aegean, Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, Brussels.

Saver Business Award Space?

Do you think it'll be possible to find on the ATH-EWR route? We have 2 tickets PHL-ATH on AA for next August but have yet to find return flights. Glad this gives us another option.

Not familiar with United European routes, is this going to be pretty impossible to find? Chances any better than on AA?

I was on a cruise that went through thee Greek Isles during the height of the financial crisis. The Islands were packed. Articles stated there was actually an increase in tourists. Prices were great. merchants happy to offer great deals.

And there were lots of Europeans but plenty of Americans

The 744 ORD-FRA (UA 906/907) seems to be permanently gone, while it was still on for a couple of months this summer.
Meanwhile, both SFO-FRA flights keep the 744. The second flight 926/927 will keep the 744, contrary to what was listed upthread.

Yes, ORD should have really been the city, for a number of reasons.

Too many cheap tickets in the NYC market, especially with the many connection options there. Many people from there will go to a connection flight over a nonstop just to save a mere $120. The opposite is true from many airports in the Midwest and West who will pay MORE for one less stop.

And let's not forget the large Greek population in Chicago.

Well, the bad economy has actually helped fill the flights, due to the fact that the hotels are now a lot cheaper.

Air Canada flys a ROUGE plane to ATH, its been rated worse than Ryan Air and trust me its horrific. So for the really desperate its an option, for others its a life changing experience.

It hasn't been announced yet, but with more -400 retirements slated for the remainder of this year and 2016, the ORD domicile will close and 747 ops will again be SFO-centric.

EDIT: By the end of next summer, UA will be at 19 747-400s in service (1 down for 2015, 1 to go, 2 leaving the fleet in 2016, and 4 retirements to come in 2017), with 18 in the scheduled pax operation, 1 (N105UA) for charter. This, coupled with ongoing reliability issues necessitating 'hot spares', requires that the 747 operation at ORD be pulled down and refocused at SFO.

I have flown Air Canada 2 summers in a row to ATH, both times, my family and I were "upgraded" to recliners..
