is seatback on demand entertainment free even in economy class on a 777? i have a long flight from hong kong to chicago...and i hope the answer is YES!

Yes. On-demand IFE is free on all wide body and long-haul flights in all cabins. Even on-demand entertainment using the (currently beta) streaming on domestic flights is free.
The only entertainment you have to pay for is on planes equipped with DTV.
