Award ticket-waitlisting different routing
I have an award ticket booked for a friend where the return, on Jan 6th, is currently GUM(IN)-KIX(ON)-SFO. The connection in KIX is not ideal, as it is a approximately 8 hours. I was able to waitlist GUM-NRT(IN) and NRT-SFO(ON). The NRT-SFO flight cleared a couple days ago, but GUM-NRT has not. The UA website is showing very limited availability for both the 7am and 12pm flights to NRT (C3Y3 and C2Y7, respectively).
My question: What are my chances of being able to call and have the phone agent convince IM to open up an IN (or even X) space on either flight? Does anyone have stories of success in a similar situation?

Your chances are about zero. If you were GS, things might be a little different.
