Definitely the nonstop EWR flight. The 2 class 777 C seat is better than the 747 C seat..not by a gigantic margin, but it's slightly wider and has some personal storage space whereas the UA seat is a little narrower and has zero storage space for personal items.

Take the non-stop unless you think you can score an upgrade to F on ORD-HKG.

I agree but I usually will book via the WC in order to max out the EQMs, if its only a few hundred then hello EWR but anything close to 1k or more hello WC.

also OP if you go via JFK to the WC its a ps plane which isnt bad in C

EWR-HKG 8060

EWR-ORD-HKG 8500

JFK-SFO-HKG 9500 thats apx 3k r/t extra in EQMs, unless the fare is way more expensive this is how Im going over EWR-HKG

I would prefer a JFK-SFO-HKG routing if I could be more leisurely about getting there and burn a GPU to get three-cabin F the entire way.

I've found myself preferring the PMUA C.

To the OP: Have you considered CX out of JFK?

It's times like the OP's that I too indeed wish I had money/miles in an OW carrier to take advantage of CX's offerings, but overall I find *A to have more TPAC options.

Another downside to connecting through ORD (or SFO) is the age of the 744s. These flights are frequently an hour late for MX and 20+ hours late seems to happen at least once a month (check the stats for this week).

My next RDU-HKG flight may go via EWR for that reason. The PMCO plane is newer and I'd like to try out the C seat myself.

Definitely EWR-HKG, even I travel on Y only. I did travel all the way from SFO for that flight.

The UC in EWR is way much better that the one in ORD.

(Also - at the least PMCO 777s have AVOD and power plug).

I've found the EWR-Asia PMCO flights to be more comfortable in business class than the PMUA equivalents, especially with the middle configuration allowing you to get out of the seats without crossing over anyone.

I have done it both ways. I would go from ORD if I could get a seat upstairs in the 747 again, that was pretty cool. Otherwise I would go from EWR.

PMCO 772s are all 2-2-2. 2 cabins.
PMUA 774s are 2-4-2 downstairs. UD is 2-2.
Seat comfort : PMCO 772s trump all.
EWR HKG food services still at the PMCO levels. Much better than UA. Specially if you choose the Asian meal choice.

I was back and forth to China from NYC for a few years, and after LGA-ORD/IAD-PEK, EWR-PEK/HKG and JFK-SFO-PEK/HKG (I was a UA and CO flier), I have to say adding a SFO stop in the mix can make for a brutal amount of time in the air, and I was flying in 3-cabin first the last time I did a JFK-SFO-China flight.

I did it for the extra EQM, but I kind of regret not going nonstop from EWR.

I think pmUA 747 C Upper deck beats CO seat. Just got off UA upper deck and still believe it is the most pleasant C class in America
