So good guess, but turned out not to be that.
As best I can tell it's because I had selected an exit row seat. It seems that for this flight simply confirming you're willing to serve online isn't enough - you need to check in at airport.
I ended up grabbing a different seat that opened up several hours before the flight. I tried again a little while later and was able to check in online with no problem. And no SSSS.
