London - flights to the Midlands

Just out of interest, does anyone know if there have ever been commercial flights between LGW/LHR and EMA or BHX??

I have family close to both airports in the midlands and get so annoyed driving between Surrey and the midlands every weekend!!

BMI, although they were "British Midland" then, used to fly 2 or 3 times a day at the peak from EMA and BHX to LHR. Occasionally a flight went EMA-BHX-LHR and vice-versa. It was useful for long haul connections. It stopped in the early 90's I think.

Excluding strike action I'll second the train option.
