Legal to mount GPS (Garmin or iPhone) on windshield?

On the off chance my two-week rental doesn't provide built in GPS, I'll have both the iPhone (Waze app) and older Garmin nüvi 1650 along (updated UK maps). That said...what's considered legal GPS positioning in a car when driving through Scotland and England?

There's no telling what the vents set up will be, so vent mounts are risky.

Same for dash top mounts (too many curved or textured surfaces that suction cups can't adhere to).

Is it legal to use a suction cup windscreen mount in the UK? If yes, where does it need to be located?

Thanks for the shared wisdom, everyone.

No problem using suction cups on the windscreen. As long as it's not blocking your view, you can put it anywhere.

No problem. You can buy them anywhere too. I needed one and got it at a motorway service station (at a price premium though).

Agreed no problem. Related Q- does the Waze app work here and is it good? I've heard a few foreigners mention it but no one I know seems to use it locally - everyone just uses Google maps.

I've used it here but I found its controls very counter-intuitive. As it's owned by Google and relies on the same data, I didn't see the point.

Perfectly fine, although I'd recommend a magnetic vent mount and a magnet in your phone case instead.

Waze is perfectly functional here. I use it all the time, even for routine trips.

waze is a lot quicker to reroute.

google maps would prioritize less complicated routes (fewer turns) while waze might make you get you off highway an exit earlier and do 10 turns on local roads to beat the highway traffic

UI isn't as good, but it's getting better (they recently added speed limits, but still missing lane info/highway signs - google maps has all 3)
