Austrian or German restaurants in London?

Hi -

I asked the hotel concierge and hunted through Google for Austrian or German restaurants in London. I was told there are none and I found nothing in Google.

Can it be possible that there are no such restaurants in London? A city so huge as London not having even one Austrian or German restaurant?

Does anyone out here know of any in London?

Thanks in advance.

Haven't been in years, but I once lived about 2 minutes walk from this place and it was always pretty good. It's a pretty rowdy place though with live music so don't go if you want quiet.

Fischers. Walk by all the time, never been in though.

By the way, this place is fairly well known. Very surprised that your concierge wouldn't think about it instantly.

I used to visit Kipferl fairly often (mainly for sausages), but I find it's often too busy these days. It's much more of a cafe than a restaurant, but they do seem to take their 'Austrian-ness' seriously. (I haven't been to their newer location at Ladbroke Grove).

Also, for fast food (mostly sausages), there is Herman ze German.
I found Bavarian Beerhouse a bit loud, tacky, and expensive.

There's a nice Austrian bakery / café on Camden Passage in Angel: www.kipferl.co.uk
Also just round the corner from there is an Alsatian restaurant, Bellanger, which does excellent schnitzel and other Germanesque dishes: www.bellanger.co.uk.

Not strictly an Austrian or German restaurant, the menu has a fairly good selection of Austrian dishes.

This restaurant is at the Aldwych, at the edge of Covent Garden.

I think you need to work on your Googling skills. A simple Google for "German food London" brought up a number of restaurants and reviews. This is just one of them:

I am surprised at my prior attempts using Google to find Austrian and German food - and I found none.

When I check Google now, I find many.

Thanks for the link.

Always difficult to generalise as Google has an annoying habit of returning most results local to the area from which you search, completely ignoring the addition of a geography in the search line. I live in London but have business interests in the Bay Area. When I search for information for some of them, often I get results mostly relevant to London and always I get completely different, and much less relevant, results from those who are based locally and search at the same time.

Agree with that. What's shocking to me is that a local concierge couldn't come up with anything.

This appears to be what happened when I made my initial Google search.

Google is great but it occasionally goes astray. as it did in my case.

The concierge was at London's Grosvenor House. I just happened to get someone at the hotel who was not familiar with Austrian and German restaurants.

All is well that ends well.
