Paddington Bakerloo line closure April-August 2016

No doubt this is related to Crossrail works and the tunnel planned to link the two together. Something of a pain in the short term for those using the only reliable means of transport to LHR as the Bakerloo provided great step free connectivity to the HEX.

The TFL status website has this to say:

Paddington: From 02 April until August, the Bakerloo line will not stop at Paddington station due to escalator refurbishment and preperation for Crossrail services. During this time, the Barkerloo line platforms, the Bakerloo line ticket hall and the Bakerloo line exits onto Praed Street and the Network Rail concourse will be closed off. Customers can still access the the Circle and District lines via the ticket halls from the Network Rail concourse and Praed Street. Access to the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines are unaffected.
So, not only are the trains non-stop, but the corridors between the station + bakerloo line gates, bakerloo line gates + circle/district platforms and the Praed Street exit are all closed too. That cuts off some good shortcuts which'll annoy commuters a second way...

It's only about a 10 minute walk from Edgware Road to Paddington, with the route along the canal barely any further and a lot nicer, so in good weather that's worth trying.

Worth noting that Lancaster Gate is also a short walk from Paddington, and is very useful for heading east at speed.

This is an under appreciated route and one that is really worth highlighting - it's less than half a mile between Lancaster Gate tube station and Paddington railway station.

Excellent point about Lancaster Gate. A bit of a schlep with bags but very easy if travelling light.

That's why I now stay at a hotel near Lancaster Gate when visiting London. It's easy and the Tube is right there. Plus the walk from HEX at Paddington with luggage even in the pouring rain is short!

Starting from Lancaster Gate, it's fairly easy to do. The lifts up from the tube platform include an announcement about which way to go, and there are signs outside. Only slightly tricky bit for a first-timer is left turn onto Spring Street, which is made complicated by Crossrail works and IIRC doesn't currently have any signs for Paddington.

From Paddington, the route used to be very easy, but then the closed the western exit onto Eastbourne Terrace to build the crossrail platforms, so now it's only "fairly easy". Take a note of the handful of directions and you'll be fine!

There is a connecting passageway being built between the Bakerloo line and Crossrail. Access will be from the area at the bottom of the current Bakerloo escalator. Will be quite deep as it will be below the Crossrail platforms as well.
