New TK Destinations for 2018
Turkish Airlines plans Mexico City and Sydney service within 2018.
Turkish Airlines chairman İlker Aycı stated the carrier plans to expand its presence in Asia and Latin America (Hurriyet Daily News, 15-Sep-2017). Mr Aycı identified Mexico City and Sydney as planned destinations. Mr Aycı said: “It is not possible to fly directly from Mexico City. Instead, we plan to have a direct flight by refuelling in Cancun”. Mr Aycı added the launch of service to Sydney is expected in 2018.
CAPA – Centre for Aviation, in a report entitled: ‘Turkish Airlines part 3: seeks to boost partnerships in Asia and Australia’, stated (15-May-2017) the carrier previously considered serving Melbourne and Sydney via Bali, Jakarta or Singapore, however CEO Bilal Ekşi said one stop flights to Australia are not currently in the network plan.

If you are talking about a nonstop IST-SYD, I think it is beyond the range of the 789 without seriously curtailing passenger & freight loads. It might require a 77L or a 345.

But there is a huge difference in distance. DOH-SYD is 7700 miles. IST-SYD is over 9200 miles. TK would have to do something like IST-PER-SYD if they wanted something marketed as a direct flight to OZ.

DOH-AKL is 9032 miles and somehow QR is pulling that off. It won't happen with the existing fleet, they would have to get the A359 within a year, a bit optimistic, but could happen.

So far the longest route for the 789 is the planned QF nonstop between PER and LHR. A flight slightly longer than 9000 miles. The QF 789 flying the route has a seriously reduced passenger load (236 passengers). The NZ 789 for example carries over 280 passengers in a 789.
The reduced passenger capacity (and I assume a similar reduction in freight) has to end up in a poor CASM for this length of 789 flight. I also expect the 359ULR will have a limited market like the 77L and 345 have. Does TK have any of the ULR variant of the 359 on order?
