Lake Tahoe: September 2005
Simply put: Lake Tahoe is beautiful in the summer as it is in the winter.
Lake Tahoe certainly is a trip worth taking for those who have never been to this part of California or Nevada. The lake is over 70 miles around and the water ranges in color from light blue to deep dark blue. The lake is up to 1600 feet deep at it's deepest point. There are 2 paddlewheel boats that will also take you across the lake several times a day but I had a much better time driving around the lake. It is a simply amazing drive.
Of course Lake Tahoe has casinos and is known for snow skiing but we did not go there for either. We chose to go to tahoe for the scenic beauty and the cool, crisp air you get in august & septemer. People were also extremely friendly there.
While our trip was over labor day, the trick is to get in early and get out late. That way you avoid the crowds which were depressed a bit this year we were told. We chose to go in 2 days before the weekend and leave a day after labor day. This way we got to see Tahoe without crowds & traffic.
I must say, if you go to Tahoe, you need to take in virginia city and reno. Virginia City is a quaint old western town in the hills outside of Reno. While there are a lot of tourist shops, the city is still a great reflection of an old western town. Worth doing in my opinion if you have never seen the old west.
All in all, Lake Tahoe was one of those places I had always said I would go to but didn't until recently and was not disappointed. Snow Skiers rave about Heavenly, Squaw Valley and other snow ski resorts and I can see why now.
Tahoe is worth a trip. ^

Tahoe IS incredible. I pracitcally grew up there...family had a cabin the mountains near the south shore, and spend at least one or two weekends every month, and several weeks in the summer there...thru childhood, high school & college.
Yep, fall is a good time to go, as it's still warm enough, and a lot of the summer crowds have gone, slightly fewer hikers/walkers on the trails too.
Couldn't get enough of scenery like Fallen Leaf Lake, Eagle Falls, Desolation Wilderness, etc.
Thanks for the report...brought back lots of GREAT memories.

SimpleMan Too, hey, nice report, I do agree about the Tahoe area, my parents have a place just on the Nevada side of South Lake Tahoe, and it's an area uncomparable to most. Where were you again?
Now, moreso, I noticed that you have your home as BHM, AL, is that still so? Question, I am going to try to email you because I have been looking for somebody on this site to help me with the BHM area, and I have to travel there probably mid Nov to see relatives. I haven't been there in about 7-8 years, and need help with hotels and which area to stay in once I get there. If you get the email, will you respond to that, or get back to me here, thanks.
