Burn, United (Miles), Burn: NH F 77W, LH F A380, LH F 744 + lots of lounges

This report is for a trip that I booked as soon as I heard about the United devaluation. I spent that Friday morning thinking about how I could fly Lufthansa and ANA first class prior to the devaluation, realized that that weekend was one of the better weekends for me to go on a spontaneous trip, started looking at flights for that weekend, tried (but failed) to convince a friend to join in on a second whirlwind trip around the world (see my first trip around the world), and then went to the airport that night to embark on the trip. The highlights were ANA First Square Class, Lufthansa A380 First Class where I was the only passenger, and the separate seat and bed on Lufthansa's 744.

Apologies in advance for the external links.

Planning
United Global First Lounge Washington Dulles (IAD)
Lufthansa Business and Senator Lounge Washington Dulles (IAD)
ANA First Square Class Washington Dulles to Tokyo Narita
ANA Suite and Business Class Lounges Tokyo Narita (NRT)
ANA Business Class Tokyo Narita to Beijing
IBIS Beijing Capital Airport Hotel
Air China First Class Lounge Beijing (PEK)
BGS Premier Business Class Lounge Beijing (PEK)
Business Traveler's Lounge Beijing (PEK)
Lufthansa A380 First Class Beijing to Frankfurt
Lufthansa First Class Terminal Frankfurt (FRA)
Lufthansa B747-400 First Class Frankfurt to New York JFK
United PS Business Class New York JFK to San Francisco

Wow, what a trip, so crazy that they don't upgrade people to first class, even when its totally empty!

The upgrade policy & upgrade instruments on non USA airlines is very different the upgrade policy & upgrade instruments on USA airlines. You may have noticed there are USA airlines that have been bankrupt, are bankrupt or will be bankrupt. There is a reason for this.

Yes, you certainly lose the allure/exclusivity of F/J when you literally start giving it away.

Really enjoying your TR, well-written and insightful. I've already burned my UA miles, but your report has inspired me to alter my itinerary!

Upgrading people to F/J due to status are purely a very American concept (i.e. AA, DL and UA). Most/if not all foreign carriers will only/most of the time upgrade people for operational reasons (i.e. overbooked Y seats and etc).

Thanks for the info, I'm pretty new to the flying outside of US stuff, and its quite different.

That makes sense that the F/J actually means something on those big intl carriers, def seem way nicer than anything I've walked through on my way to coach on a USA flight.

*someday I'll award myself into a F/J seat....*
