Malaysia Airlines MH F on A380 - Welcome to oneworld!

If there is such a thing as addiction to Cathay Pacific’s F product, I certainly have it.
Looking back at my flight log for the past 3 years, I realized that I have never flown Cathay longhaul outside of the F cabin. Not once. The product is no longer new and exciting – rather, it is very familiar and comforting. But, what is bad about being familiar with what was and continues to be one of the world’s very best first class products? Nothing, says my brain, imagining me sipping on Krug while consuming delicate Balik Salmon, which retails at over 300 euros per kilogram.

Fast forward to last month. Malaysia has just joined oneworld, and having already flown AA, BA, CX, JL, and QF in First, I now have a new option. I am in the midst of contemplating several trips and how to best structure them. Of course, I am intent on trying the MH A380. Lucky for me, there is some space available on the once daily Kuala Lumpur-Paris service, and I pounce. 330,000 miles later, I have an epic oneworld explorer award booked through AAdvantage. With 1 leg in MH F, 3 in CX F, 1 in JL F, 1 in BA F, and 2 in AA F and totaling approximately 49,880 miles, it is certainly the best value redemption I have ever made.

As, to my knowledge, there are no existing TRs involving MH A380 F, I feel obligated to share at least the first part of my journey.

March 23, 2013
Malaysia Airlines 0020: Kuala Lumpur to Paris CDG
Airbus A380-800
Seat: 1K
Loads- F: 75% (6/8), J: 100%, Y: 100%

Checkin at KLIA was a bit of deja-vu. The airport is laid out almost exactly like HKIA. Malaysia F and J checkin has one entire dedicated “aisle”: F to your left and J to your right. No queue as one would hope (expect?) and checkin was completed very efficiently. Immigration and round 1 of security were so empty that I did not bother using the Priority lanes, and less than 10 minutes after entering the airport I was on the train to the satellite area, which MH uses for its longhaul services.

The lounges are all located on the second floor of the terminal (again, much like in Hong Kong) and I was directed to the right side of the Golden Lounge. The setup is very intimate and looks a lot more like a living room than a lounge. Although the area itself is large, the amount of seating is fairly small and it was clearly designed before the days it began to be infested with oneworld emeralds ( ). Though, to say it was crowded would be an overstatement.

There are several seating areas, as well as a formal dining area – though it does not appear to be served by anyone and the food there is strictly self-service from the same buffet the rest of the lounge uses. It has a decent (average) selection of hot food, small appetizers and bites, as well as drinks. There is a smoking room, 4 relaxation suites, and several showers. When I attempted to use the shower, I was told to “take a towel from the concierge desk and use any open shower room.” Quite unlike any other lounge shower, where the amenities are brought to you and you are directed to a specific room. The system for cleaning the rooms was very unclear and it appeared to be poorly organized. Though, the shower rooms (accessible from the bathroom) were quite nice.

A prayer room, as well as a business centre, are shared facilities with the J side of the lounge. There is also a side room called the “Platinum Lounge” which I attempted to gain access to, but was kicked out after about 3 minutes. Apparently it is for Enrich Platinum members only. There is absolutely no signage to indicate this and I think it’s rather a poor show that a oneworld emerald in longhaul F would be denied access but whatever. The room was very nice though, designed to imitate a zen garden. In terms of décor, this is easily the nicest part of an airport lounge I have ever been in.

These are pics of the Platinum Lounge - not the main lounge.

At about T-30, I proceeded to the gate for the secondary security check. As soon as someone realized I was in F, I was promptly escorted through the horde at the gate and whisked to the F/J jetway (the A380 was connected at doors M1L and M2L – there was no UD jetway). After being greeted onboard I was shown to my seat. The product is visually stunning – very impressive in the cavernous A380 main deck, especially given that MH has chosen not to include overhead bins. The menu, presented in a faux-leather folder similar to SQ or JL – was already at my seat.

I was offered a pre-departure beverage. No alcohol is available on MH on the ground, and from what it appears, the MH FAs are very well accustomed to offering pax alternatives. A gift bag type thing was also distributed, which contained slippers, pyjamas, and the Bvlgari amenity kit. The chief of cabin crew stopped by to say hello. Also before takeoff, I was offered newspapers (very good selection) and was asked about meal orders. The FA doing the orders was quite pushy and did not appear to want to give me time to decide. She was definitely the worst of the 3 I saw working the cabin.

The IFE activated to show the A380 tailcam on takeoff, and switched to the AVOD system soon after. The system is decent – certainly acceptable – but doesn’t come close to matching the superb content offerings of CX, SQ, and EK. It’s approximately on par with the new BA system.

Before we go further to the meal service, let me elaborate more on the seat. It was clearly designed with attention to detail – leather stitching, striking color contrasts and use of materials, an extraordinarily large and comfortable bed, a well thought out seat controller. The details – like the ability to turn on a soft light around the TV screen – made the hard product simply stunning.

It’s not all good, though. Clearly, the designers did not do much usability testing. First, it appeared the seat was designed in spite of the cabin, as opposed to in harmony with it. Seeing out of the large windows was almost impossible. The power ports were hidden away and very inconveniently placed in relation to the rest of the storage. The lighting was wholly inadequate when the cabin was pitch black. The seat controllers’ buttons were often somewhat unresponsive. The lid of the storage compartment doubled as the cocktail tray, meaning I had to shift all my drinks every time I wanted to access something. And sometime during the flight, the enormous tray table mechanism broke and the FAs were unable to eject it – meaning I had to switch to a different suite to eat breakfast. All very subtle points, but important in an F product.

Back to the meal service. I’ll let the menu and photos speak for themselves, but the food was all quite excellent and just enough so I did not feel stuffed. The pace was quite quick (somewhat understandable for a 23:55 departure) but I did question the fact that the dinner desert offering was fresh fruit only. There was no cheese option, nor a cake or pastry of any kind. Breakfast was equally tasty and I have no complaints on the offerings there.

The bathrooms are generously sized, as you might expect on the A380. The pyjamas provided are also quite comfortable. The amenity kit was also decent – a touch better than CX’s rather scant offering but certainly also a step below SQ or JL’s fantastic kits.

After breakfast, I took a tour of the rest of the aircraft. J, located exclusively on the upper deck, looked firmly middle-of-the-road, an uninspired but comfortable looking 2-2-2 configuration. No staggered layout or privacy here. Y on the upper deck looked fantastic. Toward the back of the UD, the area was filled with the largest galley I have ever seen – it was literally about the length of a 6 row domestic 757 First cabin. Absolutely huge. Down the stairs was the rest of the Y cabin. It looked a little rough after about 12 hours of a 13 hour flight. MH did not do a particularly good job of breaking up the cabin or hiding the fact that there are almost 400 people seated in Y on the lower deck. Tour over, I slipped back into the quiet serenity of the F cabin. There is certainly a huge difference from J to F here, unlike, say, BA, where F feels more like a J+ (pics are in following post).

Just prior to landing, the chief of cabin crew once again stopped by and we talked for a few minutes. He thanked me for flying MH, and soon after, the tailcam was re-engaged and we were landing in Charles de Gaulle. MH uses Terminal 1 and has a dedicated carousel for F, J, and status baggage. I had my bag and was on my way approximately 20 minutes after we arrived at gate.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the seat and food – the product as a whole certainly has a lot of potential. The slight letdown, unfortunately, comes with the details. Below are some comparisons with other F products I am very familiar with.

MH A388 vs SQ 77W

Ground services at hub: SQ. Not by much though. Feels like a slightly more premium and special experience.
Lounge at hub: SQ. If I had access to the Platinum Lounge at KUL, I would give this one to MH. But The Private Room in SIN is good. Very good. The standard MH lounge isn’t quite as good.
Seat: MH. The SQ seat is terrible, I think, in that you cannot recline significantly and you have to get out to make the bed. Unacceptable compromises.
Food: MH. Very tough decision here, but MH wins for more variety (incl. caviar). Quality is about the same, but SQ excels slightly on presentation.
Drink: SQ. Lots of cocktail options and various high quality drinks make this one easy. Who else offers you pu-erh tea? Being able to choose Dom or Krug is the cherry on top.
IFE: SQ. In my book, the SQ system is 9/10. It is bested only by EK, who would score a perfect 10. MH is around 6.
Amenities: Tie MH-SQ. The SQ amenity kit is better, but I like the MH pyjamas and menu presentation more.
Service: SQ. It’s just so much more polished.

MH A388 vs BA 744

Ground services at hub: MH. There’s just more recognition of F pax along the way.
Lounge at hub: BA. The CCR is hit or miss, but on a good day it handily beats MH’s offering. Again, the Platinum Lounge would tip this one in MH’s direction.
Seat: MH. More space, more premium.
Food: MH. Excellent quality and regional choices with MH. BA is uninspired and inconsistent.
Drink: MH. More choices, more expensive stuff. Clearly there is a larger budget at MH.
IFE: MH. Western choices are about equivalent but having some Asian options is nice. Plus the screen is bigger.
Amenities: BA. I have a thing for the Anya Hindmarch BAg that BA offers.
Service: MH is friendlier. Though on a really good day, I have seen BA offer better than MH did.

MH A388 vs JL 77W (not the very newest seat)

Ground services at hub: JL. I love the dedicated security that is always empty and path straight to the lounge.
Lounge at hub: JL. The massage chairs on offer and more upscale feel to the lounge win this one for JL.
Seat: MH. For quality of materials and despite the shortcomings, MH feels more “first class”.
Food: JL wins this one narrowly. The food is perfectly prepared and almost all of the best meals I have had on aircraft have come out of JL’s Tokyo catering facilities.
Drink: MH. It’s just better overall. Though JL has some very exotic choices.
IFE: MH. By a mile. This one isn’t even close. JAL’s IFE is terrible if you don’t speak Japanese.
Amenities: JL. They have more thought out amenities including the fun humidity mask.
Service: Tie MH-JL. This one is really close and I don’t feel comfortable calling a winner here.

MH A388 vs CX 744

Ground services at hub: MH. CX simply does not offer priority services for F pax which IMO is not acceptable.
Lounge at hub: CX. The refurbished Wing is amazing. As is the Cabin and even the Pier. CX knows how to do lounges.
Seat: CX. The MH product looks and feels better. However, the CX product just works better and it’s clear that someone paid absolutely fanatical attention to detail to get the seat just right. Unlike MH, I can find no true flaws in the CX product.
Food: MH. I give a slight nod to MH here on quality as CX seems to have a systemic problem of underwhelming main courses during lunch/dinner services. But it is really, really close.
Drink: CX. Just as tight of a comparison as the food, I give CX the nod here for what seems like a higher quality selection overall.
IFE: CX. More western choices and especially more inspired Asian movie options give this one to CX as well.
Amenities: MH. Although I love CX’s Shanghai Tang pyjamas, I can’t say that it makes up for the poor amenity kit.
Service: CX. Just like SQ, CX simply goes above and beyond in every possible way.

I have been eagerly awaiting a F report on the MH A380. Thank you for all your time and attention to detail on this. I appreciated your comparison to other F products, most of which I know well. And I appreciated your detailing of the little things that MH got wrong with the hard product. What a shame, as that really does impact one's enjoyment of the flight. Regardless, I look forward even more to our summer flight. We'll be on the day flight to LHR which will allow us full time to enjoy the experience.

According to http://goldenlounge.malaysiaairlines.com "The Platinum Lounge is now for Enrich Platinum members and First Class guests". Do anyone have any update regarding the access of OWE or MH first class passengers?

And thanks for the very detailed TR. You have proofed me to try MH soon

Wonderful TR. Thanks for sharing it.

Ironically, though, your fair-handed review makes me a bit less interested in MH F than I'd previously been. I certainly wouldn't turn down the chance to fly it. But given the choice between MH and CX F for a given trip, I'd probably just stick with CX rather than checking out MH.

Sorry. I will upload it in a few days. I've run off to Geneva for a few days and the menu is at home but I will try to remember.

Don't get me wrong. This is not like a AA F vs CX F kind of thing. MH F has its own delights as well and it's great fun trying out something new, especially for me since I know all of the ins and outs of CX. Knowing the experience I had, I would not hesitate to book MH again.

If you're looking to wow someone with F service or are going the first time, CX is still your best bet. But if you've tried out a lot of the competition, MH is definitely a great one to try as well.
