On a historical note when Prime Minister Thatcher made her first visit to the Falklands after the war was over she travelled down in a C130.

The RAF loaded on board an ordinary domestic caravan and she spent the journey inside this with occasional visits to the cockpit to chat to the crew.

I doubt there was much else to do on board.

Nice!

I laughed at: 'full of taste from brim to base'. Somehow i really doubt that. But I suppose 'base' is relevant given the nature of the flight!

Trouble is, getting the time off work and making the schedules fit. Oh, and doing it with two under 5s.
Sounds like you are trying to plan and dream a Round The World - Southern Hemisphere only - cool.^ kudos

That would explain the Arabic writing inside some of the lockers. Everywhere visible it had been changed to Portugese and English.

I am seriously beginning to consider this Falklands trip - even though it looks like hell on earth (or so to speak) on that plane, but to be forewarned.....
There is still hope for you! The RAF Reserves take people up to age 50:

A very unusual report compared to what we usually see......thanks for posting. ^

I've often thought of going to MPN from here via SCL and PUQ using BA miles but you have to spend a minimum 7 days in the Falklands before the next flight out. Not sure I could handle seven days there.

Trayflowinuk.....

A good friend of mine flew Brize- Ascension then caught the post ship to St. Helena, where he stayed and then jumped on board again to cape town...... however, the ship schedule was DAYS adrift from published due to the whether..... good luck!

Superb report, that's not a flight you hear about every day! One question, since it was an RAF flight, was there bar service on board?

I did this return trip three times in the mid 90s on the old tri-stars. I lived on MPA for 18 months doing some contract work for the Airforce

Trust me, what you got here was luxury compared to how it used to be.

Really enjoyed your photos though; thanks

Great report. It appears that the MOD spends a little more on their flights than what we enjoy with DOD MILAIR flights. The food looks a lot better and getting an iPAD? Holy cow, why can't we do that in the U.S.?

I want a mid air refueling like the AVRO Vulcans did when flying from Ascension to Port Stanley.
