Today started off with a Continental Hungarian Buffet breakfast, compliments of the hotel, which was more than enough food for me. Three servings later and I was stuffed to the brim. I took off early to catch up on some of the sightseeing I had missed yesterday. I decided on the Hungarian National Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts (where they were exhibited Botero…a very interesting artist to say the least), St. Stephens Basilica, the Great Synagogue, and the State Opera House.
I have to say that of all the sights I saw today, the most interesting was the Botero exhibit. There was a quote written on one of the walls that really jumped out at me:
“My objective is not to relay metaphysical thoughts. My one wish is to be a painter. I approach themes as a painter rather than a commentator, philosopher or psychoanalyst. I have no intention of expressing profound emotions about the world or life in general. I would like to paint as if I were continuously painting a fruit.”
I was refreshing to hear an artist be so honest, rather than BS their explanation of what they were trying to convey in their latest piece. Granted, this could be just garbage, but why would I have any reason to doubt him? I don’t.
