Anyway to tell if someone has checked in for their flight?

Is there any way to find out if somebody has checked in @ the airport? I have his booking confirmation / e-tix info.

By asking whether he's checked in at the airport, do you mean he's not likely to check-in online?

With the confirmation number, you can go to web check-in and it will tell you whether he has checked in or not.

This won't work if he's the check-in-online-type though.

Otherwise there's probably no easy/ethical way of finding out.

Depends on the airline. UA lets you checkin with your confirmation/eticket number and your last name. You can start a dummy checkin process, and I believe it will say whether or not you're already checked in.
