really dislike when they waste a new page for a stamp, when previously stamped pages still have space (looking at you US-CBP)

I agree, though I still prefer that over them stamping a page that's already filled with stamps meaning the one on the bottom is now illegible.

I finished filling out my passport on my last trip - I was told that Cambodia required a full empty page so I needed to direct where the stamps were going to leave my last page clear.
I just had my new passport sent to me and I feel like a rookie with all the virgin pages.

Last passport had 74 stamps. The only full page is Cambodia, the China page was stamped over by Belgium and Canada - Turkey took 1/2 page with their sticker and stamp.

134 Stamps and 3 Visas (China 1 year, China 10 year, Brazil 10 year).
Added 50 pages to it a few years ago.
Passport expires in just over 3 years.
UK Immigration seems to love stamping previously blank pages.
FRA seems to like taking up the page opposite my Chinese visa.
Thankfully only 1 USA stamp from when the passport was brand new otherwise it would probably need more pages.

I just got a new U.S. passport that is not stamped yet (and probably won't be until at least the Fall since my next trip out of the US is only to Canada), but my old passport ended up with 26 stamps and one Argentina reciprocity fee sticker (which takes up the entire last page). This includes one Canada entry stamp - I was surprised they actually stamped that on a land crossing from the U.S.

Most precise stampers were, unsurprisingly, Iceland - on four rounds of entry/exits, each stamp was placed neatly in the appropriate boxes next to each other.

US (entry) - 6
Iceland - 8 (some of these were only stopovers)
Spain - 2
Argentina - 4 plus sticker
Uruguay - 2
UK - 3
Canada - 1

Also went to France during this period, but via Reykjavik, so alas no French stamps...

Four year-old passport

~265 stamps, a few visas, and three uninvited guests (stamps from Tamachi station in Tokyo, "Mitad del Mundo" in Ecuador and the observation deck of T2 in NRT)

If one has a US PP and is in the GE (Global Entry) program, when returning to the US (from abroad), CBP does NOT stamp one's PP--leaving more space for other stamps and Visas.
Before I had GE, my (previous) PP was filling up; many countries and CBP, would place new stamps over old stamps...so I didn't have to add pages.^
My current PP (issued in May 2010) has 55 stamps (including 2 Japanese stickers). [But, NO CBP stamps, since I'm in GE.]

Pre-Schengin, I was getting stamped on a very regular basis. Post Schengin it's upon initial entry / final exit re the zone, which stinks ... love getting the Stamps. Have visitied Liechtenstein and San Marino, where I'm able to get an official stamp but am charged for the privilege. Hoping to get Andorra and Monaco during my next trip over.
