Lake Sandoval

Which we hiked to from the Rio Madre de Dios. It is close to Puerto Maldonado, Peru.

There was no ambient light. It was so clear and no air pollution. At night the stars were like nothing I have ever seen. We could see satellites orbiting. Incredible.

Funny, I have been to Antarctica and was going to put that down, but, with all the base stations and tourists and ships down there during season I did not feel too isolated.

What comes to my mind is a fly-in fishing camp with inlaws in Northern Ontario toward the end of the season back in the late 70s. We flew from Winnipeg to Red Lake, Ontario, and took a float plane from there to the camp.

That's nothing compared to the destinations mentioned by some previous posters but it was an isolated and beautiful spot with great Walleye and Northern Pike fishing.

Yellowstone backcountry.

We actually got out of the car (many Yellowstone visitors don't) and hiked several hours away from the road. No people, no cars, no cell phones. Just us, trees and the creatures who live there.

Hiking in Greenland. We were in the capital city of Nuuk but got lost on the 'trail' which was a series of small faded circles painted on rocks. Other highlights: amazon rainforest in Ecuador and Easter island.

Easter Island, which they tell you is very isolated. However, isolation doesn't feel quite the same when you are with a lot of other people. There's still plenty of infrastructure and other human beings to make it not feel all that isolated.

Gobernador Gregores, Argentina (Patagonia).

Hundreds of km of desolate unsealed roads to get to the next town of any significance.

A bit like the Australian outback, but more desolate and more monotonous.

US 50 across Nevada. The highway really does live up to its tagline ("The loneliest road in America"). Absolutely beautiful out there.
