Happy 50th Birthday Boeing 737

Today marks the 50th birthday of the first flight of the Boeing 737.
Many of us have spent countless hours on this plane( either the Classic series or Next Generation).
AS has more than 150 of these in their fleet.
Many happy returns of the day 737!

I've been on every model except the -600. I had no idea I was older than the oldest 737. However, it was likely we were both conceived and/or at least under construction at a similar time.

Don't think I have been on a -600. Pretty certain I haven't been on a -100 (only 30 were made according to wikipedia), unless by chance it was on America West. I think I was on a -200 (Aloha). Most often fly on my personal 737-BBJ. (j/k)

Yes, happy birthday! I wish the fuselage were a bit wider. When flying on a 757 or A320, the difference in width is noticeable.

Really? The 757 has the same width as the 737, as far as I know

The 747 will be turning 50 in about two years...I wonder how much longer they'll remain in production.

they originally came off the same Renton production line (that also produced the 707/720 and 727), and the fuselage cylinder is exactly the same diameter

last spring put I together a trip that involved all the other series one after the other:
  • LGA-YYZ Westjet -700 (positioning)
  • YYZ-LGA Westjet -600
  • LGA-BNA Southwest -700
  • BNA-MSY Southwest -300 (overnight)
  • MSY-DAL Southwest -500
  • DAL-PHX Southwest -800
  • PHX-SEA Alaska -900 (stopover)
  • SEA-ONT Alaska -400
I flew on a -100 in PeopleExpress colors in 1983, and was on LOTS of -200s while working at Boeing Flight Test (1979-1982), as well as pretty much every major U.S. operator in the Lower 48; also the -200C in all-passenger configuration on AS (1991) ... still hoping to log an AS Combi trip this year

Done em all but the -100. Amazing 50 years later that we're still tooling around at .78-.85M generally

I don't think I was on a 737-100 unless UA flew them in 1987. But, I know I've been on the each of the other series:

-200 DL, (and UA I think in 1987)
-300 DL, CO
-400 AS
-500 UA
-700 DL, CO
-800 DL, CO, AS
-900 DL, AS

The 707, 727, 737, and 757 have the same fuselage. They all have 17.3" wide seats as well.

The 747-8 seems to be doing OK with cargo orders, It's not the white elephant the A380 turned out to be.

The 737 has never been my favorite plane. The 747 just has a coolness factor if you are in the upper deck and the 767 is my favorite for comfort in Y, but it's obviously been a favorite of the airlines. FLUFF lives.

Was at the birthday party yesterday at the museum of flight. Met captain Brien Wygle. Many neat stories shared.

actually, the first 8 737's came out of plant 2 which was in Seattle, not Renton.

If they can keep production going through the early 2020's, when a whole lot of cargo carriers will start wanting to replace their -400s, then for quite a while after that.
