Nose camera in plane?

I remember flying into Dallas (I think) on a wide body jet (AA DC10 I think) and was surprised when the Captain announced that we could watch the landing on TV. There was a camera in the nose of the plane pointed towards the ground. As we landed we could see the runway approach and could watch all the way to touchdown. A very nice cheap thrill.

Have you seen such? Any airlines do such a thing nowadays?

Lufthansa has cameras on the A380. I watched our landing in Frankfurt last week.

EK has cameras, I believe QF has them as well. Maybe even SQ has them?

QF has them on the 380-- I don't know about the rest of the fleet. It is a "tailcam" in that case (I don't recall if there were other views).

I always assumed those cameras were mounted on the nose landing gear... explaining the reason that their orientation changes when the wheels are deployed or retracted. They are very common in flights around Asia.

I flew EK last week. The A380 had cameras looking forward and directly down from around the nose, as well as a camera mounted high on the tail, giving a great overview of the plane and the forward view.

The 777-300ER has just the forward and downward looking cameras.

Here's a video someone took of the tail camera view, on the IFE, during landing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KK1Al4WxoU

On some of their 777s as well. Had it on my last IAD-ICN flight, but not on the return.
