Is there a way to rename multiple files at once?

I have taken a lot of photos on a recent trip and want to rename the file names of hundreds of these photos from what they are now (something like (2487574265465.jpg) to the name of the folder they are in (trip01.jpg, trip02.jpg etc.). Does anyone know of an efficient way to do this?

Thanks...

p.s. I use Windows on my machine

If you are renaming them to part of their orig name

2487574265465.jpg

for example to trip65 with the 65 being from the orig file, just jump out to DOS (scarey DOS) and use the

rename 24875742654*.jpg trip*.jpg

command and it will do all of them for you.

If you are assigning them new names, you could make a giant batch file in excel that does it for you, I've done that before.

Generate a directory text file

dir *.jpg /b > a.txt

which will list out all the file names to the a.txt file without any header information, any details, etc.

Bring that into Excel, and list out the new sequence number next to each file,
Use a formula to make another column that says

rename <file name from that cell> trip<your number>

Copy that column to a file with a bat extension, which should be an individual rename command on each line, save it in the directory with all the files, and run it.

I've never realized how complicated it all sounds when typed out till now, but it's real easy, I do it all the time with pictures.

I am pretty sure Google's free Picassa tool will do that.
I'm sure there are file naming tools too that someone else will chime up with.

Go to "My Pictures" & select the folder.

Go to Edit/Select all

Right-click the first file and choose Rename.

Type in the name you want to use, making sure to keep the ".jpg" extension if they're jpg files.

Press Enter.

A.f.5

Check out http://www.fauland.com/af5.htm

I use this (freeware) tool for renaming digital photo files. It also works under Vista and is very simple to use.

There is a handy little renamer tool designed to do exactly what you are looking to do. You can find it at:

http://www.1-4a.com/rename/

I used to use it for MP3 files (before ipod and itunes) and nw use it for all of my pictures.

Check out a program called "The Rename"

http://www.herve-thouzard.com/module...l_lang=english

BTW, be sure to back-up all your photos before you rename them - That way if the bulk rename doesn't work as planned, you can just delete the renamed files and start again
