Free Vista Firewall from PCTools
PCTools has released a Vista-compatible (32-bit only) firewall that is free. I've just installed it and, so far, so good. It doesn't seem to slow things down, it's correctly identifying incoming and outgoing network access and it seems pretty stable. You can get it here.
I've been looking for an alternative to Windows Defender for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is that in its default configuration it does not block outbound network access -- you have to turn it on and then configure it. This, by the way, is a critical issue as most people think Defender will block outbound traffic. If you carry sensitive data or access public websites or networks, outbound traffic blocking is vital, as it will stop things like keyloggers, viruses that transmit your personal details, etc.
If you try PCTools' free firewall, please report back on how it works for you.

Windows Defender is not a firewall. It is an anti-spyware program to protect you from trojans, spyware, unwanted pop-ups, etc.
Thanks for th update, though, on PCTools. I wish Comodo would hurry up w/ their Vista edition.

You're right -- I meant "Windows Firewall."
However, an update on PCTools -- on both my XP and Vista machines it blocked local LAN access and, even after spending time on their support forums and adding patches, it still wouldn't let my machines see each other.
Looks like I'll join the wait for Comodo.
