how does the cushion liners hold up? most of my cans, sony mdr200 and playstation gold, have ratty cushions just after a year of use.

The QC35s were released a little over a year ago, so 3 years may prove to be a bit of a challenge.

The QC25's weren't even released 3 years ago yet (official release was Sep 3, 2014). I bought mine in December 2014 and they've held up well after over 100 flights and some use at home. I even tried them on my riding mower a couple times, but decided to stick with my regular can ear muffs; it takes about 1.5 hours to mow my lawn.
What is your use case? I generally wear them for travel only, rarely do I wear them at home or the office. If you wear them every day for hours a day, that's a lot more wear/tear than what mine experience.

I'm not sure if it's available for the Bose headsets, but there are aftermarket sheepskin replacement cushions for many of the professional headsets out there.
I replaced the pads on my trusty MDR-7506 (a.k.a. MDR-V6) at least 5 years ago and the replacements are doing fine. MUCH better with moisture management and more comfortable than the original ones.
I picked up mine from B&H Photo when I was in NYC.
