They have been free at least twice in the last week,

At least until the price returns to 99 cents !

Extensive discussion over at SD as well!

I got one a SIM kit on TMo a week ago - no issues with ordering, delivery, or activation. Signal coverage is worse than ATT, but data throughput is better.

I purchased it solely to make sure the carrier unlock went into effect, since I didn't get a message in itunes.
Best $0.99 spent.

Why is notable when these go on sale? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not an offer you're going to take advantage of on a recurring basis, right?

I'm not sure what you're questioning. The normal web price is $7 and sometimes it's even on offer free.

So should I buy one? I am already a TMO customer.

If someone's not a TMO customer, would they still want to buy one?

I didn't see an option for it. I own a sim cutter for when I travel, so I just used that.

It's an easy way to test your unlock status, factory or software. Also, it's an easy way to see what kind of service t-mo offers if you're thinking about switching.
