U.S. expands airlines' reporting requirements on pet safety

Currently only larger airlines are required to report incidents occurring during the transportation of pets, but that'll change on January 1, 2015. Smaller airlines will now be included in the reporting requirements.

Under the new DOT rule, travelers flying with their pets will now be given more information in situations were loss, injury, or death occur.

"This rule will provide consumers with a fuller picture of an airline's safety record when it comes to transporting animals," Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement.
