It's really too bad. The 747-8i is a very comfortable ride. But the 77W,777X and A350 killed most of the market from a cost standpoint. Still its comfort, physical appeal and actual costs must work for certain markets.

The future of the 747-8 hinges solely on the freighter market, which is very soft indeed. Or, rather, it is very soft indeed for the traditional freight carriers such as Lufthansa, Cargolux and Atlas. There's plenty of growth in cargo, however, it is confined to the integrators. And what the integrators want, is the 777F.

I am really sorry I have never gotten the chance to fly the 747 as I do not do a lot of international travel. It is such a neat plane. I watched a great documentary on the making and history of the 747 just last week. Can anyone tell me what routes, and airlines, that are 747 heavy?

Domestically UA & DL both have 747-400s flying routes.
European BA has the 747-400 & LH has both the 747-400 & 747-8i. I believe AF just got ride of their last 747-400.
LY & SY fly the 747-400
QF flies 747-400
KE has the 747-400 & 747-8i, TG may have a few left, CI has 747-400
OZ currently has a few 747-400.

British Airways have just extended their life of their 747-4s so they should e around for while yet (unless oil prices increases again). Try getting a seat on the upper deck if you do fly for the full experience.
The A380 is technically cutting edge but will never have the elegance of the 747. Unfortunately the 747-8 does not seem to have gone down well with the airlines which are using it, mores the pity.

I've read several statements from LH & KE about how the 747-8i is performing better (financially) than originally expected and goes to cities where an A380 is not needed/available/allowed. The real reason I think they will not keep them around as long as they kept the 747-400s is the "NextGen" twin jets (787, A350 & 777X).
Definitely agree with the sitting on the upper deck.

This is sad. Hopeful the unique front load capability of the 74F will keep it around a little longer. These oil prices aren't hurting
1readyset2go DL flies the 744 domestically, check out this thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delta...ic-routes.html
