My Kingdom For a Cup Holder?

They're cheap, useful, and contrary to what some people claim, they don't make a mess. So WHY don't U.S. airlines install cup holders in their seat backs?

Ask the Pilot asks....

Kind of impractical since they will break often and be a cleaning and maintenance nightmare for the airlines

... yet many airlines are fine with this. It can't be THAT bad.

That would sure be nice since my laptop usually takes up the entire tray. Hmm easier to convince them to use cup holders or my company to get me a tablet for work.

Maybe if the cup holder was attached to your own seat or console. Seems to me like that picture of the cup holder coming out of the seat back looks like a disaster waiting to happen as soon as the passenger in front reclines or someone bumps the seat back, in which case your beverage will be all over your lap.

Actually, cup holders are not very common, even outside the US. Qatar has some. IIRC on A330 bur not on it's Boing.

The UK operator Thomson Airways (TOM) has them in economy class - we flew with them a week back to SFB (flight only).

Not a single person used them but they seemed too small.

Awful seats.

This is a thousand reclosable lids for paper cups for 21 dollars -- if you buy a few ten millions I am sure you can get a little discount http://www.amazon.com/Dixie-TP9550-S...dp/B004NG8EC8/ so probably less than a cent per drink. Something like this would be way more useful than a cupholder (of course a cupholder would rock too, I've seen that on a few airlines too).
