I flew to Europe alone when I was 16 (met a host family there). I certainly did domestic travel alone for several years before that in the 1980s. Have things really changed that much in the US that a 14-year-old would get hassled for traveling alone by air?

If their boarding pass says PreCheck LLL; or if they are young enough and going in the PreCheck line with someone who has a PreCheck LLL boarding pass and says they are accompanying said minor of a young enough age to ride the coat-tail.

TSA
Get him either the Global traveler or the TSA precheck. Should then avoid a lot of the hassels
You only need a notorized letter if it is out of the country

Sometimes the FA are problems. My 22 yo daughter who looks 15 flew to Bangkok - business class. On the return via Japan, the FA tried to bump her out of business as she was the only woman and young.
