SBIA/BKK: Runway Repairs Mar 3 - May 5, 2017

I mentioned this topic here,

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/27779086-post836.html

but think a special heads-up might be warranted. Maybe best to plan on some delays, and potential diversion; U-Tapao (UTP) has been used for diversions in the past. DMK may not have any extra capacity?

THAI warns of delays during runway repairs

Thai Airways International Plc (THAI) is fully prepared for the anticipated delays during the scheduled two-month repairs on one of its runways at Suvarnabhumi airport, says an executive.

Acting president Usanee Sangsingkeo said in a statement the partial closure of the runway from March 3 to May 5 this year for 60 days would affect aircraft takeoffs and landings during the period.

She said given the congestion at the international gateway, THAI anticipated some flight delays.

Yikes. Good to know. I arrive from ICN at 23:00. Hopefully it won't be too bad that time of night.

Carriers gird for runway resurfacing

Airlines are gearing up to deal with unpleasant effects arising from the partial closure of a runway at Suvarnabhumi airport for repairs.

The airline industry yesterday warned of a series of inevitable consequences, such as delays in arrivals and departures, extended holding patterns, missed connections for passengers and even landings diverted to U-tapao airport in Rayong.

Those are the likeliest scenarios from March 3 to May 2 as a 1,250-metre section of the northern runway, 4,000 metres in overall length, closes for resurfacing and the B1 taxiway also undergoes repairs.

Suvarnabhumi feels air traffic heat

Suvarnabhumi airport staff are being drafted in to help speed up passenger flow through immigration to cope with a spike in passenger numbers.

Responding to criticism about long queues at immigration checkpoints, particularly outbound channels, the airport's general manager, Sirote Duangratana, said staff will help passengers fill in departure and arrival forms.

Staff would also be brought in to make sure all X-ray channels before passengers head to immigration counters are manned, he said.

Runway maintenance to cut Suvarnabhumi's capacity

Airline schedules will be affected at Suvarnabhumi airport, with fewer flights per hour, during two-months of maintenance and repairs to the takeoff runway and taxiway starting this Friday, the airport's general manager has confirmed.

Sirote Duangratana said a part of the airport's east runway and the B1 taxiway would be repaved from March 3 to May 2. The maximum number of flights per hour will be cut from 68 to 60, or roughly 12%, during the work.

The work would cover a 935-metre-long northern section of the east runway known as 19L and the whole B1 taxiway. The rest of the east runway, 2,750 metres, would remain operational and able to serve most kinds of aircraft, including the long-range Airbus A380, Mr Sirote said.
