Do you have a NOTAM for the airport? I don't see any info saying it is closed. A close by airport is VTBL (Khok Kathiam Airport).

I would take a taxi to Morchit Northern Bus Terminal and then get a first-class bus to Khorat, leaving several times an hour. Easy. Cost is about 220 baht.

The buses are very comfortable, air conditioned and modern. Travel time is about 3.5 hours.

Thanks everyone for advice and tips. It turns out I'm not going myself but I've handed your posts over to a colleague who is, and who has now signed up to FT!
