I disagree, I'm often at the beach in February. It should be nice and warm in December.

120,000 SPG points per night at this place? During hurricane season? The rooms are only going for mid $500s. I just don't understand this.

More of a vent than a question, but that's insane.

I stayed on points last year in a two bedroom cottage by the pool and i dont remember it being anywhere near 120k points per night, you sure on that rate?

Can't say enough about the resort, really nice though the beach is nothing to rave about.

If 120K is correct, that is a silly number of points to use for one night. Of course, one might argue that the continuous increase in award categories is a bit out of touch with what other programs are doing. I used to be a huge Starwood fan, but have taken virtually all of my business over to Hilton.

You might not have noticed, but in this year's category adjustments (in March), far more properties were moved down a category or two than moved up. Sunset Key is clearly an outlier, but for the most part I think the current category assignments represent at least fair value, often very good value, most of the time.

There once was a time when one could stay at the St. Regis NYC for 10K points (when there were only 4 CAT's). Now they require 30-35K points per night, yet the rates haven't tripled since they were a CAT 4.

Update on the resort

THinking of a stay at the Sunset Key West Cottages... Anyone been there recently and can give us an idea of the resort etc.

Looks like 30K/night--(1 bedroom)-- we would be looking for the two bedroom and not sure taking a chance using my suite award--

Any email/contact info for the hotel-- like to see if I can do points and pay for the 2 bedroom? Or any suggestions?

Thanks!

I found this on their announcements page:

SPG Participation

All rooms at Sunset Key Guest Cottages, A Westin Resort are cottages; therefore, Starpoint Award reservations must be booked at a higher Starpoint rate through your local customer contact center.

You would have to call to check for availability instead of checking online.

Does anyone know when/why they left SPG? My family and I have wanted to stay there for years. I just looked it up to book on SPG.com and it was nowhere to be found. I spent a bit of time Googling, but couldn't find out when the change happened. I'm sad we missed the opportunity to stay here :-/

Sunset Key Cottages left the SPG family January 20th. Ocean Properties owns both the Margaritaville resort (former Westin) and Sunset Key Cottages.

http://www.oplhotels.com/portfolio/our-portfolio/

The cottages are now a part of Opal resorts:

http://www.opalcollection.com/sunset...ages-key-west/

They list the Margaritaville resort as a "sister" property.
