Some properties still manage - I was amazed that Westin Abu Dhabi upgraded me to a Junior Suite within 15 minutes of making my booking at 8pm for arrival on the same evening ^^

It has happened to me on multiple occasions. I was disappointed the first time until I figured out that it is based on availability at check in. Que sera.

Some properties have an FDC escort you to the room every time unless you specifically decline. Eliminates more than one potential problem.

I think those are rare... I've yet to be escorted to my room. YMMV applies

All that eliminates is the need to "prove" you are seeing what you see. If the computer has the room coded wrong you will still have to go back to the front desk to get a new room.

I'm generally escorted to my room at independent luxury hotels. For Starwood, it's happened at the W Hong Kong although I'm having a tough time remembering any other recent examples. Atlanta StR did it further back, maybe about six years ago.

StR Shenzhen did it for me, but that's it

It's standard at SGS.

I know a few people have chimed in, I have also only seen this at St Regis (though it was the Butler and not the front desk clerk). I don't think it is to eliminate problems but to show commitment to service.

In the past 15 years it has only happened to me at two properties: St Regis NYC (always) and Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress (once when upgraded to owner's suite).

Not uncommon at LCs. Also remember it at the Westin Tokyo.
