Eligible nights - staying in more than one hotel in one day (night)

Is it possible to earn "eligible nights" (toward SPG qualification) at two Starwood hotels for the same night?

In this scenario, the guest would physically stay in both hotels.

An example of when this might happen is if, during a short stopover, the guest decided to get a room at an airport hotel (but not on a day rate) and then take a flight, and then check into another hotel at the final destination.

Yes with SPG. Not possible with Hyatt and Hilton.

I remember this was discussed before in a specific thread and it was a no as the reasoning was you can't technically be at two places at once.

You should not have any problem using a day rate or (in the absence of it) another rate at one hotel and a regular stay at another one on the same night. On the outside chance that you are contacted with regard to this, I am sure the explanation you offer will suffice.

If, however, you tried to have a three-night stay at two different properties on the same nights, that might draw more attention than its worth.

Regarding how day rates post, see here.
