I just did a Free Night Redemption on SHERATON IMPERIAL KUALA LUMPUR and it says

Room rate excludes the following:
Gst:
6.6 % Per Room / Per Night
Hotel Charges
Room rate excludes the following:
Service Charge:
10.0 % Per Room / Per Night

Is this something new? I haven't had to pay for any additional taxes previously on award nights in Malaysia or Thailand.

Perhaps VAT laws are different in Israel if it applies only to Israeli citizens, but I've never paid percentage taxes on an award stay.

However, VAT (or TVA in French, MStW in German, etc.) is typically already included in the price of a good or service rather than added as a separate line item on the bill. [This is partly why politicians like it: it's an "invisible" tax.]

Agreed. In general you don't pay tax if it is a redemption - I've not paid tax on that before.

In terms of itemize bill, I think it also depends on its country's laws, I tend to have an itemize amount in GST listed on my bill in my current country of residence.

Is GST in Singapore or Hong Kong truly a value added tax or is it just a general sales tax? Is it included in the posted prices and then broken out on the receipt or do you pay a percentage in addition to the stated price?

There is no VAT, GST or any other sales tax in Hong Kong.

Singapore is considered a general sales tax - law requires operators to quote prices with tax included and broken out onto a receipt to show the taxed amount.

HK on the other hand, have no VAT or GST. The government tried to mention about this topic some years ago and received a very strong opposition.

The Israeli thing is special (cheap for you but not for me). Anyway, I got a message from one of the SPG champions saying SPG will pay it for me or something ,therefore, at least I can show them the email if they try to pull something.

The only tax you may pay for redemption is per person/night taxes levied by some countries, France and Italy comes to mind.
