Westin Daytona Beach Resort, opening summer 2017 [update : Cancelled]

I just came across this. Looks like there will be another option in Florida next year.

More... Seems like they bought what was considered the "dirtiest hotel in the country" and are stripping it to the studs. http://www.news-journalonline.com/ar...NESS/140609768

No, just one of the dirtiest. From the first article you linked:
The former Desert Inn, once considered one of the dirtiest hotels in the country, could be reborn next year as the most upscale hotel in Daytona Beach.
...
Travel website TripAdvisor, that same year, ranked the Desert Inn the third-dirtiest hotel in the United States.

Even further than that. From your second link:
Construction crews have scraped the Desert Inn down to its concrete.

Haha... Sorry for the "misinformation", Let me rephrase for the general population... "One of the dumpiest hotels in the US was purchased, is being totally gutted, and will be converted into a first class Westin resort."

Tiny update from a Daytona native: the banner out front still says Summer 2017, though it looks completely impossible for them to make that kind of progress. That said, in the past month or so they've finally installed floor to ceiling windows on all the upper floors, and it makes it look like they've made more progress this month than they have in the last year. It really was gutted, the locals have joked that they smeared the whole place in acid to burn out the sin.

Local update: looks like we won't be getting a Westin after all. The developers are terminating the agreement with Starwood because they liked the exclusivity and don't want another Marriott chain. Current plan on the table is for a Hard Rock. I am sad.
