This is an excellent hotel - and a great deal.
I've had the pleasure of staying at this property four times, three times on business and at least once on leisure, including a stay during the airport closure.
They have an excellent record of Plat recognition, the breakfast buffet is amazing (with the most welcoming of servers and cooks) and the staff is efficient and professional, as D1Dman writes.
During the siege, the concierge demonstrated considerable patience and was the talk of the free happy hour held on the club floor. She helped so many people - from how to get 'scripts refilled to arranging new flights once the protesters evacuated that I would feel very comfortable trusting the Athenee with most any travel concern.
I have an extended b-trip in HKG that starts tomorrow, and have been debating going down to BKK for a weekend or two, this may well be the tipping point. That's how well regarded this hotel is!

We just cheked out an hour ago.
Great hotel and staff. we were a guest of a Platinum and they offered us a junior suite last night which we passed on. We asked for breakfast this morning instead and they reluctantly agreed as the Platinum member was not present for the stay. Extremely nice buffett breakfast and we ate dinner there as well last night.
The place is really empty and I congratulate management for taking a proactive step to increase business.
On the 8th of May a relative of the Prime Minister held a wedding reception there and he was in attendance. The lobby was full of very nicely dressed young ladies with makeup and high heels. I doubt any of them were "ladies of the evening"
The current SPG category is still low as far as I'm concerned and a bargain at the above quoted rates.

i had only just booked a fully-prepaid rate at the Le Meridien (the one near silom) a few days ago for early june - had i seen this post a few days sooner, i would've picked this one up without second thoughts instead of going to le meridien!!!! 
with regards to provocatively dressed ladies, there're plenty of them around WGS & SGS for their proximity to soi cowboy... it never bothered me though...

I just booked 2 weekend stays. I wonder if they offer free internet connection with my laptop either in the room or in the club lounge at this hotel. If not, how much would it cost? Many hotels in Asia offer free internet connection at least in the club lounge.

THB1,999 is so good, but minimum 2 nights is not.
Since SPG has promotion(2 stays for 1 free weekend night) going, I will choose 1 night charge apply for food at Plaza Athenee and then move to Westin BKK for second night.
If SPG do not have such promotion, I am willing to spend a few days at Plaza Athenee which is still very good hotel, especially good for platinum members.
