Your ranking of spg brands 2010

Money is no object. Really the question is if spg gave you a free night in a city you had never been what brand would you want first, second, third etc?

I know some brands aren't as consistent as others and a 4 points in Dubai may outweigh a tired old Sheraton somewhere in the states. However in general what do you think. I'm not trying to build consensus for we all know that is NEVER going to happen on this forum. Should be fun for discussion.

I'll start:

1. St. Regis
2. W
3. Luxury Collection
4. Sheraton
5. Westin
6. Le Meridien
7. element
8. Aloft
9. 4 points

You Need two lists, one for US and one for International. For example, Westins are usually much better than a Sheraton within the US. In fact, I refuse to stay at Sheraton's within the US

Also, I think Luxury Collection hotels on average are better than the average St. Regis.

Isn't a typical LM nicer than a typical Sheraton too?

For a new builds, yes, LM should be nicer than a Sheraton. For legacy properties, LM was and still is somewhat all over the map from basic properties all the way up to luxury.

Good points about international and US based. However the Europeans will say you need to lists. One for Europe and one for international. Then the Asian based will say you need an Asian and one for international. Thus they are combined, denote your preferences and qualify them however you wish.

I rank the Sheratons above Westins for the club lounges. The Le Meridiens go from lower than four points to outstanding (fill in the blank with your favorite). Any new property is going to be better than an old one in hard product no doubt.

I love luxury collections, but those can also be inconsistent and find the St. Regis properties more consistent. However I am only one opinion.

1. Luxury Collection
2. St. Regis
3. Le Meridien
4. W
5. Westin
6. Sheraton
7. element
8. Aloft
9. 4 points

But there are so many variables, with many cities where I prefer Sheraton over Westin, 4Pts over Sheraton, etc., that these rankings aren't much more than generalizations.

I think the question "if spg gave you a free night in a city you had never been what brand would you want first, second, third etc?" would completely depend on the city and the properties.

St. Regis might have a better standard as average compared to Lux Collection.
However, I like the unique character of individual Lux Collection hotels.

Thumbs up

W. I love the way that this chain attracts the people that I'd prefer weren't in the same vicinity as me.

why don't they build these faster?

I rate element higher than Sheraton because my one element experience was better than many other experiences at the hotels below it. I wish Starwood would make more element hotels than Four Points. I have found most Four Points to be converted, old school Holiday Inns. Pretty depressing furniture, facilities, etc. Unfortunately, in some places (read: Oklahoma), it is pretty much the only option if you are a die-hard SPG guest.
