SFO 28L weekend closures - WN knows about it, but no travel waiver

SFO 28L will be closed yet again over Memorial Day weekend. Last weekend, pretty much everything out of SFO was delayed 1-4 hours. There's no reason to expect anything different this weekend...

WN knows about this, in fact they sent me this today as part of the "Get prepared to fly!" spam:

"Travel notice: SFO runway construction: Please arrive at least 2 hours before your flight."

I called up WN to see if they could switch me onto a SJC or OAK departure, but they refused - even though it's almost a certainty that I will misconnect in DAL and get stuck there overnight. (yes, of course, I checked about making the change myself - fares would be double what I paid)

Any magic words I could say to WN to get them to switch me onto a SJC/OAK departure proactively?

Thanks FT!

Absurd, especially flying East with connections. How is arriving earlier going to help the anticipated situation of late departing flights?

I just called again. They said they're aware of the construction, have cancelled a number of SFO flights this weekend already.

Since mine wasn't one of the flights that was cancelled they refused to make any changes proactively. I have to wait for the outbound to actually be delayed before they will re-accomodate (by which time it will be too late).

Nice "transfarency" WN...

Ponderous.

I don't know of the SFO-DAL frequency but perhaps get there super, super early and try to get on earlier flights once it starts to unravel?

Doesn't seem like the runway is closed for Memorial Day weekend? Unless there's a change of plans.

On mobile, so no link, but they are behind, so they decided to do construction this weekend.

For the OP. What day are you leaving. Work does not start until 22:00 on Friday.

And to answer you question? Whats your final destination and what options does OAK give you?

So lets say your flight leaves SFO on Sat at 14:00. Lefs say there is a similar flight at OAK at 14:45

WN will announce your SFO delay around 13:15.

So, if you want to take the chance, drive to SFO around 12:30. Sit in your car at the cell phone lot. As soon as the delay is announced call and ask for a seat from OAK. If they give to you, haul ... to OAK and make the 14:45 flight. If not, park in long term parking, go to SFO and make your flight.

Thats your options.

Yup, change of plans - turns out they were behind schedule and decided to close a runway to do work over Memorial Day weekend, rather than be closed more weekends during high summer traffic.

uJust a heads up Runway 28L will be closed this weekend as on two weekends there was poor weather. They will hopefullybcatch up. Look at OAK SMF or SJC as alternatives. Major delays especially on Friday SFO's busiest day. A friend of mine happened tob speak with Mr. Yakel the SFO PR liason and he apoogizes for the delays and its due to safery especially duringinclement and foggy weather. New runway lights etc. He hope it will be concluded by June 5th but it could be pushed back another weekend.

I find WN's position on this (along with the lack of interlining of course) very irritating...

They seem to drag their feet on weather accommodations too, waiting until the last minute. This is a very tricky situation trying to plan for possible congestion. Where is the airport authority in this case. They must be able to forecast their maximum capacities given the runways they have, flights schedules are a known factor. Are they asking airlines to cancel in advance.

WN should be proactive and make accommodation for those with connections flying eastbound. Good luck.
